I Tested the Old Lego Ninjago Sets, Here’s My Honest Take

This set earned its ranking through an exceptional minifigure lineup that gives collectors immense value in a small footprint. You get classic characters like Master Chen and various ninja in unique tournament attire, which makes this a concentrated nostalgia trip.

I'd rank this high for anyone hunting rare character variants without buying massive, expensive castles. The 283 pieces assemble quickly, though you might find the actual temple structure feels a bit like a half-built facade. In my estimation, the build itself plays second fiddle to the tiny plastic heroes standing in front of it.

Advanced builders who love complex architectural layering will find their match right here. This sprawling set targets older fans who want a dense, time-consuming project packed with clever building techniques.

I'm impressed by the sheer visual depth of the final model, but the footprint demands a dedicated display shelf. You get an intricate maze of balconies, stairs, and hidden compartments that keep your hands busy for hours. My view is that casual fans might find the sheer complexity overwhelming, yet veterans will savor every single bag.

An unexpected feature of this set is its modular industrial aesthetic, which blends the old-school ninja vibe with gritty urban mechanics. You get a gritty, lived-in workshop environment that contrasts sharply with the pristine temples of earlier waves.

I love how this design fits seamlessly into modern urban displays alongside larger city expansions. The cramped interior space leaves little room for posing minifigures, but the exterior detailing makes up for it. In my judgment, this is the most aesthetically unique build in the entire lineup.

The most common buyer complaint centers on the bulky storage requirements for this multi-vehicle beast. Even with that size limitation, I consider this the ultimate vehicle hybrid because it transforms into four distinct machines.

You get an airplane, two motorcycles, and a tracked vehicle rolled into one massive package. My pick for top overall spot goes right here due to that incredible play value and nostalgic punch. The sticker sheet is notoriously tedious to apply, yet the finished rolling fortress remains an absolute triumph.

Stepping down from the massive vehicle variety of my top pick, this digital-themed fortress trades wheels for towering arcade aesthetics. You get a vibrant, neon-soaked tower that feels like a physical level straight out of a video game.

I appreciate the bold color palette, though the steep stairs and delicate spire sections make it fragile during transport. The 810 pieces deliver a solid building session with plenty of unique geometric patterns. My view is that you need a soft spot for the Prime Empire era to fully appreciate this eccentric temple.
