1. Lucy Pet Vegetarian Formula Dog Food 5lb, Vegan, Powered by Plants
This formula earns its spot by providing a strictly plant-based nutritional profile for dogs with specific sensitivities. It relies on high-quality peas and chickpeas to meet protein requirements without animal-derived ingredients.
I appreciate the commitment to a meat-free recipe, though it is clearly a niche solution for specific dietary needs. You should ensure this aligns with your veterinarian’s advice before switching your dog to a non-animal diet.
Owners with dogs suffering from severe animal protein allergies find this to be a reliable alternative.
The kibble size is designed to suit most breeds.
Buyers note that the transition to a plant-based diet often requires a slow, gradual approach.

2. Grandma Lucy's Artisan Dog Food, Grain Free and Freeze-Dried – Artisan Chicken, 3Lb Bag
This food is tailored for the picky eater who turns their nose up at standard kibble. Because it is freeze-dried, it retains a natural scent and texture that usually encourages even the most stubborn dogs to eat.
In my judgment, the human-grade ingredients justify the premium cost. It feels more like a home-cooked meal than a mass-produced product.
Frequent buyers praise how easily the food rehydrates with warm water.
The limited ingredient list is a common reason for its popularity among sensitive dogs.
Many users mention that their dogs show increased excitement during mealtime after switching to this brand.

3. Grandma Lucy's Artisan Pre-Mix Dog Food, Grain Free and Freeze-Dried – 3Lb Bag
The most interesting feature here is that it contains no protein, acting as a blank canvas for your own additions. This allows you to control the exact source and quality of the meat you mix in.
I view this as the perfect choice for owners who want the convenience of freeze-drying while retaining full control over their dog's diet. It removes the guesswork from balancing vitamins and minerals.
Experienced owners appreciate the flexibility to rotate protein sources easily.
The preparation process is often described as quick and simple.
Some buyers emphasize that this is a cost-effective way to customize nutrition for multi-dog households.

4. Grandma Lucy's Artisan Dog Food, Grain Free and Freeze-Dried – Artisan Lamb, 10Lb Bag
The most common complaint involves the higher price point compared to standard dry kibble. However, you are paying for nutrient-dense freeze-dried lamb that provides superior digestibility for active, large breeds.
In my rankings, this takes the top spot because of the exceptional quality of the lamb. It is a robust, clean protein source that satisfies even large, hungry dogs without fillers.
Owners of large breeds report that their dogs maintain consistent energy levels throughout the day.
Many users note that the lack of preservatives leads to a healthier coat and better skin condition.
The most frequent positive feedback centers on how little waste the dog produces, indicating high nutrient absorption.

5. Grandma Lucy's Artisan Pre-Mix Dog Food, Grain Free and Freeze-Dried – 8Lb Bag
Compared to the 3lb pre-mix, this larger size offers a better value for your budget while maintaining the same level of dietary control. It is essentially the same flexible foundation, just scaled for consistent, daily use.
I recommend this if you have already determined that a custom diet is the best path for your pet. It removes the need for frequent reordering while keeping your meal prep routine efficient.
Buyers frequently mention that purchasing the larger bag significantly lowers the cost per meal.
The storage requirements are minimal despite the larger volume of food.
Many long-term users appreciate the consistency in the ingredient quality across batches.

Choosing Between Them
For your needs, I recommend Grandma Lucy's Artisan Lamb as the premier choice for large breeds due to its nutrient-dense ingredients. If you prefer a plant-based diet, the Lucy Pet Vegetarian Formula is your most reliable option, while Grandma Lucy's Artisan Chicken is ideal for the picky eater in your home. For those who enjoy custom meal prep, both versions of the Artisan Pre-Mix offer excellent dietary control to help you tailor your dog's daily intake.
Keep in mind that these premium, freeze-dried options typically involve a higher financial investment than standard commercial kibble. While the quality of ingredients often justifies the expense, ensure your budget accounts for the long-term cost of these specialized, high-performance foods.
